when asked what is/are my favorite movie/s, these three are always on the top of my head (in random): the virgin suicides by sofia coppola, hedwig and the angry inch by john cameron mitchell, and chunking express by wong kar wai. people who personally know me will attest to this. i'm sure, at one point in time they had this strong urge to gag me with their socks just to restrain me from further discussing my reasons for loving these films. hahaha!
the virgin suicides
probably one of the few movies that is able to mesmerized me over and over. it's like rummaging on your old stash of childhood treasures and piece by piece you find some of your infantile valuables that you thought you already tossed in the bonfire you created during the heyday of your adolescence. i like the fact that the entire plot maintained its clandestine feel that every time you watch it, you still have those unanswered question in your head. and towards the end, they will still remain unanswered and hence will forever linger in your consciousness. you feel like one of the lisbon girls' stalkers, just watching from afar and contemplating on the mystery of their existence and their premature demise.
hedwig and the angry inch
with her uncanny personality and witty songs, this "international ignored" hedwig will definitely take the music industry by storm. that is, if she really existed. i am a very big fan of musicals, but there are times that i tend to fall asleep halfway through the movies. but this one will surely keep anyone awake as if they just had a large magnitude of caffeine fix. it is not just the songs, it's also the story and script. everything was beautifully executed and only a cretin will fail to appreciate such a cerebral piece of art. it is enjoyable and very intellectual, and you seldom see the marriage of these two these days. in the end, you'll just hear yourself seeing "the origin of love" and "wicked little town" while contemplating on the possibility of love that transcends convention.
chungking express
it's not a film about people. its about emotions. chunking express is a film version of a romantic poetry that doesn't unravel itself to those who fail to probe and scrutinize. their lines are relatively short, as a matter of fact wong kar wai spent more time focusing on things rather than his actors dialogues. but those very things are the ones who actually speak for the people. hayy... words are not enough to express my adoration to this film. its simple yet very lyrical, mundane yet deep. if you're tired of being forced to ingest those quintessential cinematic crap they call romantic comedies, see this movie. you'll love faye wong and takeshi kaneshiro, my one time fiancee. hehe
